Thanks to J for giving me Warriors: Into the Wild! It's a young adult novel of the entertaining-to-adults variety, and there's a graphic novel version as well. It's part of a series about feral cats and their culture - but crossed with very anthropomorphic yet entertaining mythologies and intrigues. What a cool book. I can't wait to have kids so they can read stuff like this.
Our three vegan cat friends are from Bushwick - they were all feral cats, homeless street kittens, when we adopted them. Look at them, they're really awesome.
Read on for my GoodReads review.
This book combines the author's love of mythology with her love of cats. The result is a really true-to-life and engaging story about feral cat colonies that really shows a lot of respect for and understanding of cats' interests and behavior - colored by anthropomorphic but entertaining layers of intrigue, legend, and fantasy.
I think this would be a very interesting book to read and discuss with a child (maybe an older kid - the story is quite violent and intense) - it brings up a lot of interesting ideas around anthropomorphism, speciesism and animal rights, and similarities and differences between humans and other animals.
The book begins with nifty maps drawn from the perspectives of cats and humans, respectively - a cool touch, reminiscent of Plague Dogs or Lord of the Rings.
